Some weddings just feel right, and Em and Mils’ backyard wedding in Footscray, Melbourne was one of them. Simple, sentimental, and full of laughter. It was a day built on love, connection, and a shared bottle of Dom Pérignon in a Combi on the way to Chin Chin.

It’s no surprise Hello May featured it, a day like this reminds everyone what weddings are really about: love, connection, and doing things your own way.

They both wanted somewhere meaningful to celebrate, their family home, where their kids, Goldie and Dusty, could be part of every moment. The plan started as a small wedding, and then quickly blew out to a party with 115 guests, Em wearing two second-hand dresses and Milan picking up his suit the day before. The day was effortlessly fun and full of heart.

The backyard ceremony included hand-binding vows, heartfelt speeches, and flowers by X Flos. Then it was off to Chin Chin for a reception full of laughter, tears, and celebration. Capturing these moments is exactly why I love photographing backyard weddings.

When I asked for their tips for other couples, Em said:
“Keep it light-hearted. Don’t tell your family until the last moment, if they don’t know, there won’t be any drama.” Haha, perfect.

Their day was unpretentious, fun, and full of warmth, exactly what every couple deserves.

This beautiful wedding proves you don’t need a huge venue or years of planning to have a day that feels like you. Meaning, love, and genuine moments, that’s what makes a wedding unforgettable.
